Does ‘doing what you know’ for a job or even ‘doing what you love’ often not meet your need to survive and prosper.
I read an article in last Saturdays paper by Jessica of Murrarie from the Retail sector who was in just that predicament. I quote her words below…
” I work in a pet supplies store, not because I’m dumb or didn’t do well at school, but because I love customer service and helping people care for their pets. I work very hard, am good at my job, but no matter how much I know about pet care or how many products I sell, I still make just $17.03 an hour.
“The wage I earn is just enough, I will never be able to afford a house, a new car, or even a modern TV but that’s OK because I’m passionate about my job. If my wages are cut by 10% and penalty rates slashed, I will need to leave the retail sector, as would many other adults who would find supporting themselves on a retail wage impossible.
“If talented adult retail workers are driven out of the industry because the wages aren’t enough to survive on, the public will be left with teenage workers and the industry will suffer further. People will think, “Why not buy pet supplies online when the teenager at the store doesn’t know much more about pet care than I do?”
Jessica’s plight is a common feeling these days. 1,000 jobs were just cut from Qantas, Blue Scope steel is closing several manufacturing plants in Australia. People are finding job security to be hard to achieve. Unless you work in the mining sector, times are tough. Workers are nervous.
Everyone else in the world has low interest rates, Australia has high interest rates. Our manufacturing is under a real threat. The country is run by crazy people, the majority of whom never had a real job or ran a business
A second income stream can make life so much more manageable. A home based business can generate from a few hundred dollars a month to a few thousand, or even tens of thousands of dollars a month.
Jessica realized the fact that she could never buy a home of even a new TV with her job, she doesn’t know that there is another way to earn an income besides her job. Her job could be the means to launch her own business, and her new business could launch her new lifestyle.
Will it be easy, not really. Will it be worth it, definitely. To earn more you need to learn more, and once you learn more you can give more.
